Is the SDM01 Really Accurate? Here's the Honest Answer.

If you've been comparing energy meters, you've probably seen "Class 1 accuracy" on a lot of spec sheets — including ours. But what does it actually mean? And is the SDM01 the right choice for your project?
Here's a straightforward breakdown.
The SDM01 is not a billing meter — and that's a good thing
Most "Class 1" meters you'll find on the market are certified to IEC 62053-21, a standard designed for utility billing. It only measures one thing well: how many kWh you've accumulated over time.
The SDM01 is tested according to IEC 61557-12 — a different standard, built for devices that need to measure everything in real time: watts, amps, volts, power factor, reactive power, and energy flow in both directions.
If you're monitoring a solar system, managing EV charging loads, or building a home energy dashboard, you need real-time power accuracy — not just a kWh counter. That's exactly what IEC 61557-12 is designed to certify.
IEC 62053-21 = billing meter standard. Grades one thing: kWh accumulation.
IEC 61557-12 = power monitoring standard. Grades everything: P, Q, S, I, V, PF, f, and energy — in real time.
For any real-time monitoring application, IEC 61557-12 is the correct benchmark.
What "Class 1" means in practice
Class 1 under IEC 61557-12 means the SDM01 measures active power and energy within these limits:
| Load Condition | Accuracy |
|---|---|
| Normal load, 4A – 120A (PF = 1) | ±1.0% |
| Light load, 2A – 4A (PF = 1) | ±1.5% |
| Normal load, 8A – 120A (low PF) | ±1.0% |
| Light load, 4A – 8A (low PF) | ±1.5% |
The short version: For any meaningful load in a typical home, office, or light commercial installation, you're in the ±1.0% zone. The slightly wider ±1.5% only applies at very light loads — below 4A — which is rarely a concern in practice.
Why the CT matters as much as the meter
Here's something most meter manufacturers don't explain clearly: the accuracy spec applies to the complete system — meter plus CT — not the meter alone.
The split-core CT that comes with (or is approved for) the SDM01 is not a generic accessory. It's a calibrated component. The meter's firmware is specifically tuned to compensate for that CT's characteristics. Swap it out for a random third-party CT, and the Class 1 spec no longer applies.
This is why we're strict about CT compatibility:
SDM01 Gen1: Ships with a factory-matched CT. The Calibration ID on the CT must match the one on the meter. This pair is calibrated together as a single system.
SDM01 Gen2: Works with any CT on our approved list. Each approved combination has been independently tested to meet Class 1. More flexibility — same rigour.
Built for the way you actually install
We designed the SDM01 to make Class 1 accuracy achievable in real-world installations — not just in a test lab.
- 📐18mm DIN-rail footprint — fits in tight panels without rerouting cables
- 🔌Split-core CTs — clamp around existing wires, no need to disconnect live conductors
- 🔄Bi-directional measurement — handles both consumption and generation on the same circuit
- 📡Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Modbus — connects to whatever platform you're already using
Accuracy means nothing if the device is too difficult to install correctly. The SDM01 is designed so that a careful installer gets Class 1 results every time.
